So what is Urban Mobile Lifestyle?

Certainly I was not the first person to vision this lifestyle. There have been many who have lived in their RV’s, Mobile homes, trailers, boats, and vans in cities for a long time. My goal is simply to prove that Urban Mobile Lifestyle (UML) can actually become an intelligent and fashionable mainstream lifestyle alternative to modern living. The trend is already rapidly growing and I believe that it will soon be recognized as a viable lifestyle alternative.

Some of the values that many living this lifestyle is promoting are that UML is:

Economical – Promoting rent, mortage, and property tax free living with minimal dependence on electrical grids.

Sustainable – Promoting renewal energy sources and new technologies to achieve self-sustainability.

Green – Promoting minimum carbon footprint living.

Minimalistic – Promoting you to enjoy everything the world has to offer, while being attached to less and less.

Trendy – Promoting technology, travel, sustainability and mobility.

Responsible – Promoting you to be the change you want to see in the world.

My Mission is to further the rights and perception of those who responsibly live in their mobile homes, trailers, and RV’s in cities and other Urban Areas and to further promote Urban Mobile Lifestyle as an intelligent, economical, sustainable, fashionable, and responsible mainstream alternative to individuals living in cities and urban areas.

Well, let me tell you a short version of the story of how I did it.

It was about 8 months ago that I decided to start my journey to what I now call the art of urban mobile lifestyle (UML), the new more economic, sustainable, and fashionable, mobile way of living in cities.

Ultimately my goal is to combine my UML lifestyle with the lifestyle of what Tim Ferriss calls the lifestyle of the New Rich (NR) on his book The 4-Hour Workweek.

But my initial goal was simply to live in different cities and to have the ability to move from one city or location to another whenever I wanted to.

Obviously with the technological advances today it has become possible to do work anywhere you want to, so I thought about many different combinations to achieve my goal.

I compared the different advantages for of buying a SUV and a trailer, a fifth wheeler, a large van, to buying different classes of RV’s. Finally the solution that I came to was to purchase the 2009 Winnebago ERA model.

So far it had turned out to be the perfect solution for my urban mobile lifestyle.

The 2009 ERA model gives a great gas mileage, which is perfect for frequent economic travels (its turbo diesel gives 17 – 22 miles/gallon. It is small enough to be comfortably driven even in a city, yet large enough to have a cozy bed, a kitchen, bathroom, and a nice living area. It is fully self-contained RV with the modern luxuries of refrigerator, microwave, TV, satellite dish, Sirius radio, wireless internet access, computer, yet the van’s streamlined look does not make it stand out like many of the other more conventional looking RV’s, which makes it the perfect van to park in almost anywhere. (And no I am not getting any kick packs from the Winnebago, at least not yet)

With no monthly rents, no utilities, no property taxes or insurance payments, to worry about, and not much cleaning to do, I have so far been very pleased with my experience and the freedom UML gives you.

Obviously, the lifestyle does come with some challenges. Number one, unless you are hooked up to sewer, water, and electricity you have to try to maximize the capacity of your holding tanks by limiting your use of the shower and restroom and preserve your RV battery life by a careful use of electricity. And number two; it is hard for me to have a big salsa dance party in the hallway of my living quarters.

I will be posting more specific posts on my survival stories later.

But having lived the last few months in San Francisco, visited salsa clubs, hanged out in whole foods and coffee shops, and just randomly checking the scenery, I have probably saved thousands of dollars in rent alone. And whenever I get tired of my neighbors or surroundings, well I just start the engine and go.
